Chen Hongzhu 陈虹竹

Chen Hongzhu (1982) belongs to the new generation of artists in China. She is a strong and bold woman whose work has already entered major international collections such as that of worldwide acclaimed Uli Sigg. Hongzhu graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and has developed her unique style influenced by American artists such as John Currin and Mark Ryden.

Her paintings portray female beauties often accompanied by fantastical yet realistic animals. After a first glance, these apparently impeccable dolls often reveal some sinister signs such as subtle cuts and dripping blood. Combining sweet memories of childhood with the harsh reality of adulthood Chen Hongzhu creates stunning fairy tales characters through playful and dreamlike colours and compositions.
